  • Balinese Massage for Two: The Cossara Ritual
Adults only

The phrase "couples massage" suggests two separate massages happening in the same room. In most places that is exactly what it is — two therapists working in parallel, never looking at each other. Brief, efficient, forgettable.

Balinese massage at Cossara works differently. The two therapists who greet you have trained in Bali (or here to an Indonesian standard, depending on which day it is) and are matched in tempo. When one is working on your back, the other is working on your partner's back at the same rhythm. The feeling is closer to a shared ritual than to two parallel treatments. That is what people remember.

This article is about what Balinese massage actually is, what happens in our room, and why we offer it specifically for couples.

What Balinese massage is (briefly)

Balinese massage is a tradition from the Indonesian island of Bali — a blend of Indian Ayurveda, Chinese acupressure and local methods. It differs from classical Thai in that there are no joint manipulations (you are not bent into positions). It differs from Swedish in that it works in longer, slower lines and uses only plant-based oils. It differs from aromatherapy in that the emphasis is on pressure and energy meridians, not on the scents.

The core elements are: long stroking movements along the muscle, deep pressure with thumbs and elbows on specific points, light stretching of the arms and legs without joint work, and a closing section with a warm cloth on the face. The whole thing takes 70 to 90 minutes.

Why specifically for couples

Two reasons make a couples' massage more than a commercial "two for one".

First: the parallel feeling. When your partner is on the table next to you and the two therapists are working in sync, something odd happens — you both drop into deep relaxation at the same time. Massages are relaxing on their own. When they happen simultaneously, the relaxation doubles — not because of more sensory input, but because subconsciously you know the person you love is in the same state.

Second: the conversation afterwards. There are few moments in ordinary life when both partners are calm at the same time. After a couples' massage you walk back to the room with your shoulders lowered, in a quiet stroll — and then in the relaxation lounge, sitting in armchairs with cups of warm water and lemon peel, your conversation has a different timbre. That is the difference.

What happens in our room

Our couples' room has two massage tables 80 cm apart, soft white light on a dimmer, quiet gamelan music in the background, a diffuser with ylang-ylang and sandalwood. The room temperature is 24 °C — a touch warmer than a standard spa room, because Balinese massage asks for open pores.

The session begins with a five-minute conversation in robes — both therapists ask whether you have any injuries, back pain or skin sensitivity to oils. Then five more minutes warming up in the room with a hot foot bath.

The massage itself is 70 minutes, in four phases:

  • 15 minutes back — long slow movements along both sides of the spine, no pressure on the spine itself.
  • 15 minutes legs — from the feet upwards, with focus on the calves (where walking tension collects).
  • 15 minutes arms and shoulders — particularly important for desk workers.
  • 10 minutes neck, face, scalp — most people briefly fall asleep here.
  • 10 minutes rest — the therapists step out, you stay another ten minutes under a warm blanket.

The coconut oil

We use fractionated coconut oil — a refined form that stays liquid at room temperature, does not stain the sheets, and rinses easily out of hair. It is unscented; the aroma comes from the diffuser, not from the oil itself.

Coconut oil absorbs into the skin more slowly than mineral oils, which gives it an advantage during a long massage — it does not "evaporate" after twenty minutes and does not need re-applying. Your skin will stay soft until the end of the next day.

What Balinese massage is not

Before booking, it helps to know what it is not, so you do not arrive disappointed.

It is not a sports treatment — for a serious sports injury or chronic pain you need a physiotherapist, not a spa therapist. It is not a "cracking" massage — we do not work on joints and we do not do chiropractic adjustments. It is not therapy in the medical sense — it does not cure back pain, it does not "release toxins" (a marketing myth), and it does not melt fat.

What it is, is deep relaxation and improved circulation for the next 24–48 hours. It does not sound dramatic, but it is exactly what people return for.

When to book it

The second evening of your stay. Not the first — your body is still in travel mode then, your muscles are tight from hours in the car, and the massage feels superficial. Not the last evening either — by then you are already relaxed and the massage adds little.

The second day around 5 pm is the sweet spot. The body has settled, you have two hours until dinner, and you can change at a calm pace.

What to expect afterwards

The first 30 minutes after the massage you feel slightly lightheaded — it is normal. Sit on your terrace, drink water, leave the phone alone. We do not recommend alcohol for at least two hours — your body has released stress hormones and alcohol absorbs more strongly than usual.

You will sleep more deeply tonight. In the morning you might feel a faint muscle soreness — particularly if massages are not part of your usual routine. It fades by lunch.

Booking

We take bookings on the day of arrival or via WhatsApp the day before. The price is €130 for the couple, 70 minutes. It is offered only to Cossara guests — we do not take external clients for spa treatments.

If you have specific preferences (deeper pressure than usual, focus on certain areas, particular music) — tell us at the time of booking. At least 24 hours' notice is appreciated, so we can synchronise the two therapists who specialise in couples' work.
